Behind the Scenes: How Brass Becomes Handcrafted Decor

Behind the Scenes: How Brass Becomes Handcrafted Decor

There’s something special about holding a piece of brass hardware that feels sturdy, timeless, and beautifully made. At TDW Canada, every towel ring, hook, knob, and holder begins long before it reaches your home — in the hands of skilled artisans who treat brass like a living material.

Today, we’re taking you behind the scenes into the process that brings your favourite TDW pieces to life.

1. It All Starts With Solid Brass — Not Plated Metals

Before anything else, the raw material is selected. We use pure, solid brass, known for:

  • its durability
  • its natural golden warmth
  • and its ability to last decades

This is the kind of metal that gets better with age - a little like wine, but way more stylish in your bathroom.

2. Shaping the Metal: The Art of Casting

The next step is where the magic gets messy (in a good way).

Molten brass is poured into carefully designed molds that define the shape of every piece - from peacock motifs to Victorian curves. This stage requires:

  • precise temperature control
  • detailed mold work
  • a patient hand

One tiny slip, and the piece is rejected. Quality first, always.

3. Expert Hands Create the Details

Once the brass cools and releases from the mold, it doesn’t look elegant yet.
It’s rough, uneven, and covered with casting marks.

Enter our skilled artisans.

Using hand-tools and polishing wheels, they:

  • refine every curve
  • smooth out every surface
  • carve or enhance design elements
  • ensure symmetry and balance

This is the part where craftsmanship shines. No machine can replace what human hands do here.

4. Polishing: Turning Raw Metal Into a Jewel

You know that soft glow our brass pieces have?
That’s thanks to a multi-stage polishing process.

Each item passes through different grades of polishing until it gets that rich, lustrous finish TDW is known for. The difference between “just brass” and “TDW brass” is all in this step.

5. Lacquer Time: Adding Long-Lasting Protection

Left: Lacquer applied and drying.  Right: Once dry, each piece is fired to lock in the protective finish.

Once polished, the hardware is coated with a protective lacquer that:

  • prevents tarnishing
  • keeps the golden shine intact
  • protects against moisture
  • adds longevity to the brass

You’ll often see pieces drying on racks - a quiet moment where they become fully ready for their future homes.

6. A Final Quality Check (We’re Strict Here)

Before a product ever reaches your cart, it undergoes a detailed inspection.
Every curve, joint, screw hole, weight, and finish is checked.

If something is even slightly off, the piece doesn’t make the cut.
We want you to feel confident that what arrives in your home is the absolute best.
